AI influencers for brands: hype vs. reality, and how to actually use them
Virtual creators are everywhere in 2026. Should your brand collaborate with one, build its own, or stay away? Here's the honest answer from people who run four of them.
Why would a marketing agency launch Dodol Dadu, a wide-eyed Bengali grandpa who dances and cracks jokes? Simple: I wanted to learn, first-hand, what makes people follow a character that doesn't exist. You can't sell AI influencers to clients if you've never built one yourself.
Today we run 4+ AI influencers in-house, including Dodol Dadu (comedy and dance), Hippie Habul (fun motivation) and Mira Sen (product reviews and UGC). Here's what I've learned.
What exactly is an AI influencer?
An AI influencer (or virtual influencer) is a character created with AI tools that has a consistent face, voice and personality, posts regularly and builds a following, just like a human creator. Brands can collaborate with them for posts and reels, or build their own character as a long-term brand face.
It's different from a one-off AI presenter in an ad. An influencer has an audience that comes back for the character, not just for the product.
Why brands are interested
- Always on-brand. No controversies, no tantrums, no "the creator posted something awkward last night".
- Always available. Festive campaign tomorrow morning? The character is ready.
- Any language. The same character can talk to Bengali, Hindi and English audiences.
- Ownership. If you build your own, the face, the followers and the content belong to your brand.
- Consistency at scale. Dozens of videos a month with the same look and tone.
The reality check
Personality beats polish
The internet doesn't need another perfect-looking AI face. What works is a strong, specific personality. Dodol Dadu works because he feels like someone's real dadu: over-the-top, emotional, a bit dramatic. If you can't describe your character's personality in one line, people won't remember it.
Audience takes time
Building a character's following is like building any creator's: consistent posting, a recognisable format, and patience. If you need sales next week, use AI UGC ads; if you want a brand asset for the next three years, build a character.
Trust needs honesty
Pretending an AI character is a real person is the fastest way to lose trust, and in India ASCI's influencer guidelines expect virtual influencers to disclose that they aren't human. Say it clearly in the bio and in branded posts. Paid partnerships still need the usual "ad" disclosure too.
Collaborate or build your own?
- Collaborate with an existing AI influencer if you want quick reach to an audience that already exists, for a launch, a festival or a contest.
- Build your own character if you want a mascot for years: a face for your ads, your reels, your packaging and even your customer support.
Many brands do both: start with a collaboration to test the format, then build their own once they see what their audience responds to.
A simple starter plan
- Define the personality. Age, voice, quirks, what they love, what they'd never say. Write it down like a character brief.
- Pick one format. A weekly skit, a daily tip, a product review series. Repetition builds recognition.
- Post consistently for 8 to 12 weeks before judging results.
- Bring the character into your ads. Once people know the face, ads featuring it often feel less like ads.
- Disclose, always. "AI character" in the bio, clear labels on paid posts.
Frequently asked questions
Are AI influencers legal in India?
Yes. ASCI's influencer guidelines cover virtual influencers and expect them to disclose that they aren't real humans, alongside the usual paid-partnership disclosure.
Should I hire an existing AI influencer or build my own?
Collaborate for quick reach to an existing audience. Build your own if you want a long-term brand face you fully control.
Will people trust an AI influencer?
People follow characters that are funny, helpful or relatable, as long as the character is honest about being AI.
